It’s a video iPod! Kind of….

October 13th, 2005  |  Published in Technology, Web/Tech

New iPods
Well Apple held their announcement yesterday (including at Television Centre in London!) and revealed a video iPod. I’m not sure I’m going to be tempted to be honest. It seems like a normal iPod that just happens to play video as well. I thought a video iPod would have a widescreen screen, and a bigger one at that. Think Secret reports that this might be a kind of half way step towards the launch of a proper video iPod next year. So I might hold of buying one for now and wait and see what happens.

What is interesting is a couple of changes to the iTunes music store. The new “Just for You” feature recommends tracks to you based on what you’ve bought in the past - now that’s useful. You can now also send a song to someone as a present (or even an album or a whole playlist) and they’re selling videos.

Whilst I know it’s a probably a dry run for a full movie download store next year, the inclusion of television programmes to buy is a bit worrying for me. Does that mean that in the future we’ll be paying for programmes by the episode? That would be expensive! I’d rather watch programmes, record them and be able to watch them on the go on my iPod.

One thing’s clear though - the iTunes music store seems to be ahead of the pack, and whilst the video iPod didn’t turn out to be everything I wanted, at least they’re still moving with the times, which will probably ensure they hang on to their 75% share of all music players worldwide for a bit longer.
