What’s up at work

June 21st, 2006  |  by Simon  |  published in Work

Well, I thought I’d just do a quick post to say what I’m up to at work at the moment. I got promoted two weeks ago, which is obviously good news! So now I’m a full-time proper Producer. Still no word on the salary yet though ! GRRRR…..
I’m preparing to produce another live outside broadcast [...]

Another pop institution bites the dust

June 20th, 2006  |  by Simon  |  published in Film / TV, Music

Well after Smash Hits magazine departed us, it’s another pop legend going soon, after it was announced today that Top of the Pops is departing from our screens on the 30th of July, after 42 years.
Music television has definitely moved on, what with MTV, The Box, and Smash Hits TV (which continues) and the like, [...]

How to fold a wrap

June 18th, 2006  |  by Simon  |  published in Food and Drink

I make wraps a lot to take to work (I always take lunch when I’m skint, which is most of the time at the moment). But, I have never got the hang of how to fold them properly without everything spilling out. No more! Thank you to Bill Grady and his excellent diagrams!

This could be my next mobile ‘phone

June 18th, 2006  |  by Simon  |  published in Photography, Technology

I don’t like Nokia mobile ‘phones. I find the navigation on their menus completely un-user-friendly and difficult to work out - the opposite of Sony Ericsson ‘phones (I currently have the k750i).
My mobile’s due for an upgrade soon though, and unfortunately Sony Ericsson’s upcoming offerings look decidedly boring - unless you’re interested in a Walkman [...]

A Bigger Big Mac

June 18th, 2006  |  by Simon  |  published in Food and Drink

I haven’t been to McDonald’s for a good six months or something, but as I walked three and a half miles back to work the other day after a meeting, I thought a McD’s wouldn’t do me any harm (or my waistline). So I popped in and tried the Bigger Big Mac, which is available [...]

A night at Belfast’s new 5* hotel

June 18th, 2006  |  by Simon  |  published in Belfast, Friends

Yes, but I wasn’t staying there unfortunately! Thursday night, a couple of us headed down to Cafe Vaudeville, a strange looking bar in Belfast, for its first birthday party. It was ok - a couple of Miss Northern Ireland candidates were there, which was nice! And we did get some free drinks, which was good [...]

Summer in Paris

June 12th, 2006  |  by Simon  |  published in Music

I don’t really like Paris Hilton. I think she’s annoying and a bit of a slapper, but I was pleasantly surprised when I heard her first attempt at music. It’s about 20% UB40 who I hate with a passion, but it’s a great song for summer days. Even if her voice has obviously been manipulated!
Found [...]

Two interesting things about whales I have learnt this week

June 12th, 2006  |  by Simon  |  published in Nature, Weird

1. Sperm whales sleep upside down.
2. Humpback whales sing ‘love songs’ to attract mates. The ones that sing the longest win.
Now why can’t life be so simple for us blokes? I could sing for ages.
Found in The Observer.

The Motorcycle Diaries

June 12th, 2006  |  by Simon  |  published in Film / TV, Travel

After being out on Thursday night and getting a bit hammered, I stayed in this weekend, and watched The Motorcycle Diaries (not that that took all weekend). It basically tells the story of two guys from Argentina who decide to travel round Latin America on an old motorbike. What makes it interesting is that one of the [...]

Miss Belfast

June 12th, 2006  |  by Simon  |  published in Belfast

On Thursday night, G, Jill and I headed along to the Miss Belfast 2006 finals, which were being held in Zen (pictured above).
Miss Belfast apparently goes through to the Miss Ireland finals, while Miss Northern Ireland goes through to the Miss United Kingdom finals - very PC! Anyway, Christine was hosting, so we got drunk [...]
