Spotify – the end of buying music?

March 15th, 2009  |  by Simon  |  published in Apple, Music, Web/Tech

Spotify is a new piece of software (well relatively new anyway) which you can download to your PC or Mac and then listen to as much music as you want – for free. It’s advertising supported, so unless you sign up for the premium account, you’ll be hearing an ad every four or five tracks [...]

iLife ‘09 and the new iPhoto

January 29th, 2009  |  by Simon  |  published in Apple, Photography

I bought Apple’s new iLife software package on Tuesday from the Apple Store in Belfast (they seemed to have plenty in stock as well) and spent the night playing with the new iPhoto. iPhoto and iDVD are the only parts of iLife I use (I use Final Cut Express for video editing, and don’t use [...]

BBC iPlayer downloads now available for Macs

December 18th, 2008  |  by Simon  |  published in Apple, Technology, Web/Tech

Mac users have been able to stream video from the BBC’s iPlayer service for a while now – nearly a year I think, but now you can download video as well, and keep it for 30 days before it expires. The BBC has launched a new version of the iPlayer desktop manager, which you can [...]

UK iTunes store gets tv programmes

August 29th, 2007  |  by Simon  |  published in Apple, Film / TV, Internet, iTunes

TV programmes debuted on the UK iTunes store today. At the moment you can buy (for £1.89) programming from ABC, Disney and MTV amongst others. More info here.
Until we see some BBC and Channel 4 programmes on there, I don’t think this will really go mainstream, although some big shows like Ugly Betty and Grey’s [...]

O2 to get the iPhone?

July 5th, 2007  |  by Simon  |  published in Apple, Mac, Technology

The Times is reporting today that O2 has won the battle to be the carrier for the iPhone in the UK. That’s good news for me as I’m on O2, and can’t wait to get my iPhone – I haven’t upgraded my ‘phone now for like 2 and a half years!
However, I’m not going to [...]

Why do we have to wait!

June 19th, 2007  |  by Simon  |  published in Apple, Mac, Technology

The iPhone arrives in the US next week. And still no word about when it’s going to arrive on these shores. I’ve had my current ‘phone for two and a half years now and it’s beginning to suck. But I don’t want to sign up for a new 12 month contract before the iPhone arrives.
If [...]

A week of new appliances and getting to grip with Final Cut Express

March 18th, 2007  |  by Simon  |  published in Apple, Technology

I think this might be the most exciting post I ever write! I have been busy this week getting to grips with new household appliances. I got a new washing machine / tumble dryer delivered on Wednesday after successfully managing to disconnect the old one without entirely flooding my flat. It seems extremely complicated (as [...]

Stuff you might want to put on your new Mac

January 25th, 2007  |  by Simon  |  published in Apple, Family, Mac, Technology

My sister Ailse got a new laptop this week – her first Mac, a Macbook. I’ve had a Mac for a while now, so I helped her set it up with some stuff that I think is pretty useful, but which you might not know about if you’ve just got your first Mac. Here’s what [...]
